Brooklyn City Council Races Heat Up As Candidates Join Forum in Flatbush

It was hot out on the morning of Saturday, July 15th, but things were even hotter inside Erasmus Auditorium!

More than 230 tenant leaders and community residents came out to Flatbush Tenant Coalition’s Candidate Forum to take stock of our City Council candidates and learn where they stand on critical issues at this time of unprecedented gentrification, displacement, and struggle.

Candidates sparred with one another (and sometimes with the audience!) about campaign donations from Real Estate, stopping police violence against people of color, a proposed high-rise development on Cortelyou Road, immigrant rights, affordable housing, and much more.

If you weren’t able to make it, check out the video here: part 1 and part 2.

An incredible and rare opportunity for our community to decide who WE want to represent us.  And another show of force by the Flatbush Tenant Coalition – people power in action!

Many thanks to everyone who joined us!  And congratulations to our entire Candidate Forum Committee for an incredible event!  Some special shout outs: our moderators — Melody, Roylyn, and Tammy – who held it down through some heavy turbulence!

Jean, for reminding the candidates of their “great love affair” with the people!  And the rest of the committee for a powerful event:  Beverly, Gordon, Jennifer, Loraine, Lloyd, Lucia, Marie, Paulette, Mr. Paul, Redoneva, Ruth, Sandra, Scherry, Sherryann, Wendell, Wilner, and Valerie.
