Flatbush Tenant Coalition – Monthly Meeting – November 5th, 2016

Our wonderful tenant leader, Beverly Rivers kept our November meeting running smoothly!

Tenant leaders like Marie Laroche reported back to the Coalition about Brooklyn Tenants United’s progress in securing a new & improved Housing Court building!
Dedicated tenant leader, Paulette James, presented Coalition leaders with a summary of BTU’s Housing Court Tour with Thom Lotito of New York City’s Office of Court Administration, and next steps for the task force.
A packed house early on a Saturday morning for our November Coalition meeting!
Mr. Nesly Paul shares his experience testifying at the “Stop Predatory Equity” press conference and legislative hearing outside New York City Hall on October 31st, 2016. In his heartfelt testimony, Mr. Paul explained, “Predatory equity is discrimination,” and that it “causes harassment and gentrification.”

Passionate tenant leader, Redoneva Andrews, makes an important point during November’s Coalition meeting. A cameo appearance by former FTC organizer, Malika Shaakira Conner!

The second half of our meeting focused on “Knowing Our Rights” as rent-stabilized tenants in NYC. We broke out into groups to answer Tenant Rights trivia questions! Say cheese, Denton!

Emergent leader, Ruth H. draws an insightful analogy between gas station clerks price-gouging in the midst of a crisis after Hurricane Sandy and “Rent Gouging” landlords who unjustly use preferential rents to take advantage of NYC’s affordable housing crisis. Brilliant!

Towards the end of our meeting, Reina gave a powerful testimony explaining why she fights for tenants’ rights and will continue to fight for justice & defend marginalized people of color!

Our next and last Coalition meeting for 2016 will be Saturday, December 10th at 9:45 a.m. inside Baptist Church of the Redeemer (1921 Cortelyou Rd. at Ocean Avenue).
We hope to see you there!
